Since its discovery in 1819, bronchiectasis treatment has traditionally focused on alleviating symptoms and preventing exacerbations. However, recent advancements in medical research have introduced promising new updates that offer hope for improved outcomes.

In this article, we’ll look at new treatments for bronchiectasis in 2025 and how they can improve quality of life and lung function.

What is the New Treatment for Bronchiectasis?

One of the most significant recent developments in the treatment of bronchiectasis is the drug Brinsupri. Developed by Insmed, a U.S.-based pharmaceutical company,  Brinsupri has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating individuals older than 12 years old with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.1

Brinsupri works by inhibiting the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase I (DPP1). By targeting this pathway, it works to reduce lung inflammation and tissue damage, which directly addresses the underlying causes of exacerbations (flare-ups).2

Ongoing Clinical Trials and Research

Other pharmaceutical companies are exploring new bronchiectasis treatment options. Boehringer Ingelheim, for instance, is conducting Phase III trials to investigate potential therapies targeting the vicious vortex of bronchiectasis and the disease’s underlying mechanisms.3

These efforts reflect the need for targeted treatments beyond symptom management. This goal is to modify the disease process to improve long-term outcomes.

The Role of Vitamin D

The benefits of vitamin D have long been established, but its role in treating bronchiectasis continues to be explored. Studies have found that patients with bronchiectasis often exhibit vitamin D deficiency, which correlates with increased disease severity.4 Research indicates that individuals with higher vitamin D levels tend to have better radiological, clinical, and functional outcomes, suggesting a protective effect of vitamin D in patients with bronchiectasis.

Vitamin D supplementation may offer several benefits:

These findings are promising, but since studies are ongoing, vitamin D supplementation should be approached under medical supervision. Talk to your doctor about the proper dosage for your individual needs.

Where Do Airway Clearance Devices Fit In?

These pharmacological advancements are exciting and will work well alongside current known and effective non-drug therapies, including airway clearance devices. The SmartVest Airway Clearance System helps clear mucus from the lungs, leading to:
