We’re so grateful for something that is so helpful for Madelynn’s health.

Madelynn’s SmartVest Story

Madelynn was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) soon after birth. Within her first year, Madelynn was sick with many respiratory infections, and her parents were left feeling heartbroken and helpless.

When Madelynn turned one, her pulmonologist prescribed another form of chest physiotherapy, the SmartVest Airway Clearance System. Introducing a new routine two times a day for a one-year-old can be a struggle, but Madelynn’s parents kept at it and did some research to learn how they could make treatment time easier.

“One day, I was reading an article about how children, whose other sibling(s) has special needs feel, and the potential for them to feel left out,” said Rebekah, Madelynn’s mother.

“I feel happy because it’s good for her!”

Upon learning this, Rebekah asked her four-year-old son how he felt when Madelynn had to do her treatment. His response made a huge impact and has been life-changing for their routine, “I feel happy because it’s good for her!”

Just like that, a shift happened and things started to change during Madelynn’s SmartVest therapy treatment. It’s gotten less traumatic and even includes a new made-up song.

“Almost through the winter months and she has not been sick once”

“We have our routine in the evening: dinner, bath, and ‘shakey-shake’,” said Rebekah. “Every time now, you hear one or all of us say, more than once, encouraging her, ‘It’s good for you,’ and she calms down.”

“Here we are, eight months later, almost through the winter months and she has not been sick once,” Rebekah said. “We are so grateful to her CF team, SmartVest, and most of all, to her big brother for helping us change our perspective and use something that is so helpful for Madelynn’s health.”
